In pursuit of a peaceful denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula
Statement by Christian Network for Peace and Unification

During the past 63 years of inter-korean confrontation that could have escalated to a war any time since the Korean War, two Koreas have prudently avoided an all-out war that might have possibly brought the entire Korean peninsula to mutual destruction and come to sign six different agreements including 7.4 North-South Joint Communique of 1972 in order to put an end to the Korean division and achieve peaceful unification. However, in spite of all efforts made by two Koreas towards such peaceful unification, the force that reinforces the divided structure has been brought back in place to be reactivated, thereby causing North Korea to be nuclear-armed and South Korea and the international community to call for tougher sanctions against the stubborn North. North Korea and the US have been so much apart when it came to a nuclear issue: North Korea asking for a guarantee of signing a peace agreement as a prerequisite for a nuclear abandonment and the US asking for a nuclear abandonment prior to a peace agreement. It has certainly remained as a core issue of the inter-korean confrontation and the conflict between North Korea and the international community over the past 10 years and it is still an ongoing issue as well. For this reason, all members of the Christian Network for Peace and Unification like to make this statement by praying that the Lord, God Almighty would denuclearize the Korean peninsula.

1. North Korea should abandon nuclear weapons.
North Korea claims that a nuclear development is inevitable to protect itself from the US hostility and has even attempted to overcome international sanctions by continuing to develop long-range missiles and promoting miniaturization and weight lightening of nuclear warheads. However, before pointing out the US hostile policies, North Korea needs to face up to the truth that its persistent development of nuclear weapons has provoked a military rivalry between two different blocs in Northeast Asia and even paved the way for Japan to rearm itself. North Korea¡¯s consecutive nuclear tests left the bombed areas to become the land of death. Nevertheless, putting aside the strained bi-lateral relationship caused by this nuclear test, two Koreas should actively support non-governmental interchange and cooperation. In the times of even tougher inter-Korean confrontation, both the South and the North should overcome such difficulties for unification and have no letting up in their effort towards peace and unification despite the threat of war. We urge the authorities of North Korea not to be obsessed with security tactics focussing on nuclear weapons but to take constructive strategies in order to establish peace in Northeast Asia, to improve inter-korean relations, and to promote dignity and freedom of both South and North Korean people.

2. We ask the international community to take practical and peaceful action for a peaceful settlement of the nuclear crisis.
In spite of the UN sanctions imposed against North Korea for the purpose of its nuclear abandonment, we still witness that China and Russia continue to trade with North Korea and even permit wire-transfers to the North, thereby leaving the sanctions in vain and North Korea even proceeded with the 4th nuclear test as well. Moreover, the US, which refused to sign a peace agreement with North Korea and turned down its request for establishing diplomatic relations but took the stance of strategic patience, needs to come to admit that its North Korea policy is a total failure. It is deplorable that the US and China focus only on their status quo in the region without having actually taken any effective action for North Korea¡¯s nuclear abandonment. We ask China and Russia to take the lead in establishing diplomatic relations and proceeding with signing a peace agreement with North Korea beyond sanctions against North Korea.

3. We urge Park¡¯s government to put forth its balanced effort for a resolution of the nuclear issue.
We certainly understand President Park¡¯s effort of cooperation with the UN and the international community in imposing sanctions against North Korea for a peaceful settlement of the nuclear crisis. However, we oppose President Park¡¯s attempt of a military rivalry in Northeast Asia in the name of tougher sanctions against the North.
We urge Park¡¯s government to play a leading role in promoting a US-North Korea dialogue and signing a peace agreement for a peaceful and fundamental settlement of the nuclear crisis. In addition, non-governmental interchange and cooperation should not be discontinued. It is a project that prepares a ground for unification in the long run. Thus, we ask for a guarantee of continuous support at strategic level.

4. We come united and pray together for a peaceful settlement of the nuclear crisis.
We along with Korean churches would like to come united and pray together as follows:

(1) We repent for having failed to understand the creator of peace God¡¯s will for the Korean peninsula and only passively reacted to His call.

(2) We pray that the nuclear crisis would be settled peacefully according to the ¡°Great Commission¡± commanded by our Jesus Christ.

(3) We pray that the nuclear crisis would not provoke the rivalry between Korea-US-Japan and North Korea-China-Russia to escalate to a military confrontation.

(4) We pray that two Koreas resolve the nuclear issue and move forward for a new era of unification with peace and justice.
